What is Ocean Gate Titan
The Ocean Gate Titan is a submersible that can carry up to five passengers and dive to a depth of 4,000 meters. It is operated by a game controller at the surface. It is made of carbon fiber and titanium, and was designed with NASA and the University of Washington.
The submersible is owned and operated by OceanGate Expeditions, a private company founded by Stockton Rush and a business partner in 2009. The company offers deep-sea expeditions to various locations, including the Titanic wreck, for customers willing to pay $250,000 per trip.
Ocean Gate Titan – Who Are Missing
The submersible went missing on June 18, 2023, while descending towards the Titanic site with five people on board. The passengers include Stockton Rush, the CEO of OceanGate, Hamish Harding, a British billionaire, Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a Titanic expert, and Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood, members of one of Pakistan’s wealthiest families.
The search and rescue operation is still ongoing, but the chances of survival are slim as the oxygen supply is estimated to last only until 5 a.m. ET on Thursday. A Canadian surveillance aircraft detected some underwater noises in the search area on 20 June 2023, but they were inconclusive and could not be confirmed as coming from the submersible. OceanGate has also been accused of ignoring safety warnings and not having the submersible certified.
